The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Friday strongly condemned the reported Houthi attack targeting Saudi Arabia’s Najran region, calling it a violation of the kingdom’s sovereignty and a threat to regional security.
In a statement, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said such attacks undermine Saudi Arabia’s security and stability. The ministry reiterated Abu Dhabi’s full solidarity with Riyadh and affirmed its support for all measures taken by Saudi authorities to protect the kingdom’s security.
The statement came after Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said on social media platform X that a statement from the Yemeni Armed Forces would announce a “distinctive military operation.”
Earlier this week, the Houthi group claimed responsibility for attacks on Saudi-linked vessels and infrastructure. On Wednesday, the group said it had targeted a Saudi oil tanker in the Gulf of Aden with a ballistic missile, following an earlier claim of a separate missile strike on another Saudi tanker in the northern Red Sea.
Saree claimed that the tanker named “Daisy” was hit and forced to change course. He said the action was part of what the group described as a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia under its “blockade-for-blockade” policy.
The Houthi spokesperson also claimed that another tanker, “Wafa,” was targeted with ballistic missiles near Yanbu, a major Saudi Red Sea port city.
On Tuesday, the group claimed it carried out a drone attack on Najran airport in southwestern Saudi Arabia, describing it as a response to alleged Saudi drone activity over Yemeni territory.
The latest developments have raised tensions between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia after the group announced on July 20 what it termed a maritime ban on Saudi-linked shipping in the Red Sea, citing alleged restrictions imposed on Houthi-controlled areas.
Since then, the Houthis have claimed several missile and drone attacks targeting Saudi-linked vessels and energy facilities, while the Saudi-led coalition has resumed airstrikes on what it described as key Houthi military positions in Yemen.
The renewed hostilities have intensified concerns over security in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait, with fears of a wider regional escalation after a period of relative calm in Yemen.
