Veteran action director Sham Kaushal has completed 46 years in the Hindi film industry, marking the milestone by looking back at his difficult early years in Mumbai and expressing gratitude to the people who supported him when he was struggling to make ends meet.
Sham, father of Bollywood actor Vicky Kaushal, shared an emotional video on social media, recalling that August 8, 1980, was the day he became a member of the Movie Stunt Artists’ Association and formally entered the film industry.
He said joining films was never part of his original plan. Sham had travelled from Punjab to Mumbai in search of a job and initially found employment, but left it because of what he described as a deep inferiority complex. With encouragement from friends, he eventually found his way into the stunt fraternity.
Recalling his financial struggles, Sham said he could not afford the Rs 1,000 membership fee at the time. Friends contributed small amounts to help him pay it.
He also remembered hotel owners who provided him food free of cost and friends who helped him pay the rent for his room.
Sham credited stuntmen, stunt directors and action directors for teaching him the craft and giving him opportunities to earn a livelihood and support his family. He recalled becoming an action director in May 1990, thanking producers and directors who trusted him with work.
Over the years, Sham has become one of Hindi cinema’s prominent action directors, working on films including Black Friday, Krrish, Kaminey, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Padmaavat, Sanju, Dangal, PK, Tiger Zinda Hai, Simmba, URI: The Surgical Strike, Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva, Dunki and Animal.
He concluded his message by expressing his affection for Mumbai and the film industry, wishing happiness and good health for everyone.
