Celebrity chef Vikas Khanna has opened up about the deeply personal ritual he follows every morning at his New York restaurant in memory of his late sister, Radhika.
Appearing on the latest episode of the streaming chat show Shekhar Tonite, Khanna recalled how his sister had encouraged him to create a restaurant that felt more like a home and was built around people rather than money.
Khanna said Radhika had spoken to him about the idea before the pandemic, telling him that he had been gifted with something special because a significant section of people considered him part of their family.
According to Khanna, she urged him not to simply open another restaurant but to “build a home”, explaining that restaurants could be opened with money, while homes were built with people.
Radhika later fell ill and passed away. Khanna said he initially resisted the idea of opening another restaurant, believing that he did not need to take on the demanding responsibility of running a new establishment at that stage of his life.
However, memories of his sister and a promise he had made to her eventually changed his mind.
He recalled being reminded by his mother that the restaurant was the last promise he had made to Radhika and that his sister would be watching him fulfil it.
Khanna eventually opened the restaurant without reservations on what would have been Radhika’s 50th birthday.
He said the establishment has a glass roof and that every morning he goes upstairs and creates a rangoli using flowers in his sister’s memory.
“After making the rangoli, I fold my hands. I say, ‘If you’re watching, this is for you’,” he said.
