Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Friday alleged that her party was being targeted because it continues to demand restoration of Article 370 and Article 35A.
Mehbooba made the remarks while staging a protest in Srinagar after police summoned her daughter Iltija Mufti for questioning in connection with an alleged assault case involving a police personnel.
The Kothibagh police station in Srinagar registered an FIR on August 5, accusing Iltija Mufti of allegedly assaulting a policeman on duty during a protest organised on the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370.
Iltija Mufti appeared before the police on Friday. A group of PDP workers attempted to accompany her to the police station but were stopped on the way.
Addressing reporters, Mehbooba alleged that the PDP had become a target for the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as it was the only political party in Jammu and Kashmir seeking restoration of the special constitutional provisions.
“Every attempt was made to break our party. We were harassed and intimidated. Didn’t the National Conference and the Congress hold protests for restoration of statehood? Why was our protest only stopped?” she asked.
She alleged that those responsible for the abrogation of Article 370 and the current situation in Jammu and Kashmir stood exposed.
Referring to former Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) chief A.S. Dulat’s recent remarks, Mehbooba said Dulat had described National Conference president Farooq Abdullah as the tallest leader of Jammu and Kashmir and had stated that Abdullah’s regret was that Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not consult him before the abrogation of Article 370.
She also referred to statements attributed to late National Conference founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah regarding Article 370, saying that his remarks from 1981 were reflected in the developments of 2019.
Mehbooba further alleged that while political leaders were holding protests demanding restoration of statehood on July 5, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited Poonch and Rajouri districts of the Jammu region instead of taking a stand on the issue.
The PDP’s proposed protest march through Srinagar was stopped by authorities, and party leaders and workers were confined to the party headquarters in the Residency Road area of uptown Srinagar.
