Mumbai Police are investigating a suspected cyber fraud in which a senior official of a nationalised bank allegedly lost Rs 4.27 lakh through unauthorised credit card transactions, with investigators examining whether the malware attack originated from a public Wi-Fi network at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).
Police suspect the fraud may have begun after the victim’s personal secretary connected his mobile phone to the free Wi-Fi service at CSMT. Investigators are examining whether the device was compromised through the legitimate network, a fake hotspot or another method.
According to police, 56-year-old Gobinda Biswas, a general manager at a nationalised bank’s Fort office, received a message on July 18 from his personal secretary, Narayan Swami. The message appeared to contain an official Regional Transport Office (RTO) traffic challan along with an Android application package (APK) file.
Swami had reportedly connected his phone to the free Wi-Fi at CSMT before the message was sent. Police suspect that after the device was compromised, the malicious APK was forwarded to more than 200 contacts, including senior bank officials.
Biswas downloaded and installed the application believing it to be genuine. Investigators suspect the malware accessed sensitive information on his phone that was subsequently exploited for financial fraud.
Biswas noticed unusual activity on July 21 and deleted the application. However, police believe the malware may already have extracted relevant information. Five unauthorised credit card transactions totalling Rs 4,27,264 were allegedly carried out within 28 minutes that day.
The fraud was discovered on August 3 when Biswas received his credit card statement. The bank had attempted to contact him and subsequently blocked the card after detecting suspicious transactions.
Biswas later filed a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, following which MRA Marg police registered an FIR on August 4.
Police are investigating the source of the malware and the precise method used to compromise the mobile device. They have advised citizens to exercise caution while using public Wi-Fi and avoid installing applications received from unknown or unverified sources.
