Seventh seed Iga Swiatek produced another dominant performance at the Canadian Open, defeating Viktorija Golubic 6-2, 6-1 in just 66 minutes to advance to the last 16 in Toronto.
The former World No. 1, who reached the semifinals of the tournament in 2023, conceded only three games against the Swiss player in their third-round encounter.
Golubic holds a unique place in Swiatek’s career as the only player to defeat the Pole in the opening round of a Grand Slam. That victory came at Wimbledon in 2019, when Swiatek was 18. Swiatek has since won their next three meetings and has dropped only five games across their last two encounters.
“It was a good day, and I’m really happy with the way I played,” Swiatek said after the match. She admitted to a slow start but said she quickly found her rhythm and took control.
Swiatek will next face either 10th seed Marta Kostyuk or 19th seed Madison Keys as she looks to reach the Canadian Open quarterfinals for the second time.
Eala continues impressive run
Meanwhile, 25th seed Alexandra Eala continued her strong North American hard-court campaign by defeating Alycia Parks 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 to reach the third round in Toronto.
The Filipina entered the tournament fresh from winning her maiden WTA singles title at the Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington. Despite having only two days to switch venues, the 20-year-old made a winning start to her Toronto debut.
Eala dominated the opening set, winning five consecutive games from 1-1 to take it 6-1 without facing a break point.
Parks responded in the second set, saving four break points in an early service game before breaking Eala in the 10th game to level the contest.
After the players exchanged early breaks in the deciding set, Eala secured the crucial break in the fifth game to move 3-2 ahead. She then won the next three games to seal victory in one hour and 51 minutes.
Eala’s win extends her impressive run following her breakthrough title in Washington and keeps her campaign alive at the National Bank Open.
