Delhi-NCR residents woke up to cooler and pleasant weather on Friday as light rain and cool winds brought relief from the humid conditions earlier this week. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rainfall over the next three days and issued a yellow alert, warning of moderate to heavy showers in parts of the national capital.
The IMD said rainfall activity is likely to continue across Delhi and the National Capital Region, with light showers expected over the weekend. It has also warned of a low to moderate risk of flash flooding in some watersheds and low-lying areas during the next 24 hours.
The forecast comes a day after widespread rain lashed Delhi and neighbouring areas, causing waterlogging and traffic disruptions at several locations. Persistent showers on Thursday also brought a sharp fall in temperatures, making it one of the coolest days of the season so far.
According to IMD data, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 27.6 degrees Celsius on Thursday, 6.6 degrees below Wednesday’s 32.6 degrees Celsius and nearly seven degrees below the normal maximum of 34.2 degrees Celsius for this time of year. The minimum temperature stood at 25.6 degrees Celsius, resulting in a difference of just two degrees between the day’s maximum and minimum temperatures.
Heavy rain began early Thursday, prompting the IMD to issue an orange alert. Lodhi Road recorded the highest rainfall among the city’s monitoring stations at 60.4 mm, followed by Safdarjung at 56 mm and Delhi Ridge at 54.4 mm. The IMD categorises rainfall between 15.6 mm and 64.4 mm as moderate.
Several parts of the capital reported waterlogging following the showers. The Public Works Department received complaints from Press Enclave Marg, Defence Colony, Kanjhawala and Palla. Water accumulation was also reported in parts of Karkardooma, Saraswati Vihar in Pitampura and several stretches of Dwarka.
In Gurugram, police issued an advisory on Thursday morning urging corporate offices and private establishments to consider allowing employees to work from home. The move was aimed at reducing traffic congestion and facilitating the movement of emergency services.
