Violent protests broke out in Patna City on Friday after a youth was killed in a road accident near Zero Mile, with angry protesters setting a bus and three police vehicles on fire during clashes with authorities.
The incident took place near Pahari Pump House under the jurisdiction of Agam Kuan police station. Police identified the deceased as Manish Kumar, who was allegedly hit by a speeding bus. He died on the spot, while the bus driver reportedly fled from the scene after the accident.
Following the incident, local residents and the victim’s family members gathered at the spot and launched a protest demanding strict action against the accused driver and measures to prevent frequent road accidents in the area.
The protesters blocked National Highway-30, bringing traffic movement on the busy route to a standstill. They burnt tyres, raised slogans and alleged that speeding vehicles had made the stretch dangerous for commuters.
The situation worsened as the protest turned violent. The mob allegedly set the bus involved in the accident on fire and also damaged and torched three police vehicles. Police teams reached the site to control the situation and clear the highway blockade.
Clashes were reported between protesters and police during attempts to disperse the crowd. Additional security personnel were deployed in the area to restore normalcy and prevent further escalation.
Journalists covering the protest were also reportedly attacked by members of the crowd.
Police have initiated investigations into both the accident and the subsequent incidents of arson, vandalism and assault. Authorities are examining CCTV footage, mobile recordings and other available evidence to identify those involved in damaging public property and attacking police personnel.
The deceased youth’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and his family has been informed. Security arrangements have been strengthened in the area, with police maintaining a close watch to prevent any further unrest.
