Three Lok Sabha MPs from West Bengal’s minority-dominated Murshidabad district have approached Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking his intervention in two issues — reports of removal of loudspeakers from mosques and delays in decisions on electoral roll-related cases following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
The MPs — Khalilur Rahaman of Jangipur, Abu Taher Khan of Murshidabad and former cricketer-turned-politician Yusuf Pathan of Baharampur — wrote to the Home Minister on Thursday seeking action on the two matters.
According to the letter, the MPs have received reports that police authorities were directing mosques in different parts of Murshidabad to remove microphones and loudspeakers.
While acknowledging the Supreme Court’s directions and existing regulations governing noise levels, they urged the Centre to ensure that the rules are implemented uniformly and sensitively without hurting religious sentiments.
The MPs also raised concerns over the pending cases of voters whose names were deleted from electoral rolls during the SIR exercise conducted in West Bengal earlier this year.
They claimed that a large number of genuine voters were still awaiting decisions from the concerned tribunals, resulting in difficulties in accessing essential services and completing official procedures, including passport verification, land registration and government welfare benefits.
The MPs urged Shah to intervene and expedite the disposal of all pending cases involving genuine voters, with the objective of completing the process by the end of this year.
They also suggested that additional tribunals could be established if required to clear the backlog. Besides, they sought a grievance-monitoring mechanism to track the progress of cases and address concerns raised by affected citizens.
The three MPs further urged the government to ensure that genuine citizens whose cases are pending before tribunals are not deprived of essential public services during the adjudication process.
