A 28-year-old postgraduate medical student was declared brain-dead after she was allegedly run over by a car at a mall in Rajamahendravaram in Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari district, police said.
Two engineering students, who were allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, have been arrested in connection with the case.
The incident took place on Tuesday but came to light on Thursday after CCTV footage of the incident was widely circulated on social media.
The victim, identified as Priyanka, was pursuing postgraduate studies at GSL Medical College. She was travelling as a pillion rider on a scooty with a friend and was leaving the mall when the car allegedly struck the two-wheeler from behind near the main entrance.
According to police, the rider and security guards attempted to respond after the initial collision, but the car allegedly rammed the scooty again and ran over Priyanka, causing severe head injuries. The vehicle then fled the spot as security personnel and others raised an alarm.
Priyanka was initially taken to a local hospital in critical condition and was subsequently shifted to Hyderabad for specialised treatment. Doctors later declared her brain-dead.
Police identified the arrested accused as Suravarapu Daswant, who was allegedly driving the car, and Andrew Joseph Edwards. Both are students at an engineering college in Namavaram near Rajamahendravaram.
Police said the two men had gone to the mall to watch a movie but were denied entry because they were allegedly drunk. They reportedly misbehaved with mall staff before leaving the premises and subsequently allegedly struck the medico near the main gate.
Deputy Commissioner of Police A. Subhash said both accused had been arrested and a case registered against them. A separate case was also registered over their alleged misbehaviour with mall staff.
Further investigation is underway.
