India and China held discussions on boundary delimitation, border management, institutional mechanisms and trans-border cooperation during the 36th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) in New Delhi.
The meeting was held on August 6, with the Indian delegation led by Sujit Ghosh, Joint Secretary (East Asia) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), while the Chinese side was headed by Hou Yanqi, Director General of the Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the MEA, both sides held “frank discussions” and reviewed the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). They reiterated that maintaining peace and tranquillity in border areas was essential for the overall development of bilateral relations.

The two countries agreed to continue utilising existing diplomatic and military channels, including WMCC meetings, local commander-level talks and other agreed mechanisms, to resolve pending issues and prevent misunderstandings along the LAC.
The discussions were held as a follow-up to the outcomes of the 24th Special Representatives’ (SR) Talks, with both sides exchanging views on boundary-related matters, border management, mechanism-building and cooperation on cross-border issues.
During the meeting, India also called for an early convening of the Expert Level Mechanism on trans-border rivers and highlighted the importance of sharing technical information related to upstream projects.
Earlier this week, the MEA said India and China had taken several steps to improve people-to-people ties, including the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and restoration of civil aviation connectivity between the two countries.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said discussions between the two sides were progressing positively and expressed hope that the recent measures would further strengthen bilateral relations.
The statement came amid concerns raised by members of the Indian diaspora regarding alleged abusive content targeting Indians and Indian culture on Chinese social media platforms.
