The Delhi Police have arrested a 45-year-old Nigerian national who was allegedly staying illegally in India and had been declared a proclaimed offender in a narcotics case registered in Chandigarh, officials said on Friday.
The arrest was made by the Anti-Narcotics Cell of Dwarka District Police during a special verification drive against overstaying foreign nationals under Operation VISTA 1.0.
Police said the accused had earlier been arrested in connection with a cocaine supply case registered at Sector-31 Police Station in Chandigarh and was declared a proclaimed offender by a court in 2021.
Investigators also found that he had allegedly changed his identity and was carrying forged coloured photocopies of travel documents to evade law enforcement agencies.
Acting on the directions of Dwarka District DCP Kushal Pal Singh and under the supervision of ACP Operations Subhash Malik, a police team was formed on August 1 to trace overstaying foreign nationals and verify those involved in criminal cases.
Based on technical surveillance and human intelligence inputs, the team apprehended the suspect from Uttam Nagar. During verification, he produced coloured photocopies of a passport and visa identifying him as Daniel Marton, a 45-year-old resident of Lagos, Nigeria.
During questioning, the man disclosed that he had previously been arrested in an NDPS case in Chandigarh and that proceedings in the matter were pending. The information was subsequently shared with Chandigarh Police and its Proclaimed Offenders Cell.
Further verification of police records established his actual identity as Michael Wilfred M. Bonu, son of M. Bonu. Chandigarh Police records showed that he had been declared a proclaimed offender in FIR No. 87/2019 under Sections 8/21 of the NDPS Act at Sector-31 Police Station through a court order dated August 23, 2021.
His identity was confirmed using dossier photographs supplied by Chandigarh Police.
Following the confirmation, a team from the Chandigarh Police Proclaimed Offenders Cell travelled to Delhi and took custody of the accused. He was handed over to SI Dalbir of Chandigarh Police for production before the concerned court and further legal proceedings.
Police said no narcotics or other contraband was recovered from him during the operation. Officials, however, highlighted the role of inter-state coordination in establishing his identity and securing his arrest.
