At least 416 people were killed and 629 others injured in 458 road accidents across Bangladesh during July, highlighting the country’s continuing road safety challenges caused by reckless driving, poor road conditions and inadequate enforcement of traffic regulations.
According to a report by the Road Safety Foundation (RSF), 57 women and 48 children were among those killed in the accidents, reflecting the severe impact of road crashes on families across the country.
Motorcycles emerged as the most dangerous mode of transport during the month, with 159 crashes claiming 138 lives. Motorcycle-related deaths accounted for 33.17 per cent of all road fatalities, while such accidents represented 34.71 per cent of the total crashes recorded, the report said.
Pedestrians were also among the worst affected, with 106 people losing their lives while walking on or crossing roads. They accounted for 25.48 per cent of the total fatalities. The report further noted that 51 drivers and transport assistants were killed, making up 12.25 per cent of the overall death toll.
National highways witnessed the highest number of accidents, with 169 crashes accounting for 36.89 per cent of the total incidents. Regional roads recorded 155 accidents (33.84 per cent), followed by urban roads with 66 crashes (14.41 per cent) and rural roads with 61 accidents (13.31 per cent). Seven accidents occurred at other locations.
Among Bangladesh’s eight administrative divisions, Dhaka reported the highest number of accidents and fatalities. The division recorded 133 crashes that claimed 125 lives, accounting for nearly one-third of the country’s total road deaths during July.
Chattogram registered the second-highest number of accidents and fatalities, followed by Rajshahi and Rangpur. Barishal recorded the lowest figures, with 28 accidents resulting in 24 deaths.
In Dhaka city alone, 34 road accidents were reported last month, leaving 18 people dead and 47 injured.
Road safety experts have repeatedly pointed to factors such as overspeeding, reckless driving, unsafe motorcycle use, poor road design, weak traffic law enforcement and shortcomings in public transport management as major contributors to Bangladesh’s road accident crisis.
The RSF report stressed the need for stronger enforcement of traffic rules, improved driver training, safer road infrastructure and increased public awareness to reduce preventable deaths on roads across the country.
