Punjab Police has advised its personnel to avoid wearing uniforms while travelling between their homes and places of duty following the killing of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Harjit Singh in Amritsar.
In the wake of the incident and in view of the security concerns for police personnel posted in districts along the Pakistan border, the Inspector General (IG), Border Range, issued an advisory to the Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) of Amritsar Rural, Batala, Gurdaspur and Pathankot.
The advisory directs police personnel to wear plain clothes while travelling to and from their places of duty. They have also been asked not to carry or display any sign, symbol or other item during personal travel that could disclose their identity as members of the police force.
The advisory stresses that all prescribed security protocols must be strictly followed during private travel, with personnel urged to remain particularly cautious about their identity and personal safety.
ASI Harjit Singh was killed while performing his duty on September 18. Following the incident, police teams launched an investigation and intensified searches for those responsible. A high alert was sounded across Amritsar and adjoining areas, with checks stepped up at toll plazas and other strategic points.
Police later received information that the suspects were moving in the area and could potentially be looking for another target, prompting security teams to intensify efforts to locate them.
One of the accused in the murder case was killed in an encounter on September 19, while his accomplice escaped under the cover of darkness, according to Punjab Police Commissioner Harmanveer Singh Gill.
Gill said the killing was part of a conspiracy involving Pakistan-based handlers. According to the police, the youths were allegedly lured with promises of money and a share in the illegal drug trade, while the handlers demanded proof of loyalty through attacks targeting police personnel.
Investigators also found that after allegedly shooting ASI Harjit Singh, the accused returned to the crime scene and recorded a 30–40-second video, purportedly to send it to overseas handlers as proof that the task had been completed. The activity was reportedly captured on CCTV, while forensic examination of mobile phones is underway.
Gill appealed to parents to closely monitor their children’s activities and help protect them from exploitation through social media, drugs and criminal networks.
