The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday accused the BJP-led Central Government of using central agencies to create fear among Punjab Government officials and obstruct the welfare and development agenda of the Bhagwant Mann government.
Reacting to the action involving the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA), the party alleged that the authority was being targeted at a time when the Punjab government’s welfare initiatives, including the Mawan Dheeyan Satkar Yojna, were receiving public support.
AAP said GMADA plays a major role in Mohali’s planned development and generates revenue through various development activities. It questioned why central agencies were targeting the authority and alleged that the move was intended to put pressure on officials and disrupt the functioning of the elected state government.
“The BJP-led Centre is trying to frighten Punjab’s officers through central agencies because it cannot stop the Mann Government’s work politically,” AAP said in a statement. The party alleged that pressure was being created among GMADA officials and that an atmosphere of fear was being generated within an institution responsible for Mohali’s planned development.
The party also highlighted GMADA’s financial role, saying its resources contribute to Punjab’s broader capacity to undertake development and welfare initiatives. AAP alleged that action against the authority therefore amounted to an attempt to affect the state government’s ability to implement its programmes.
AAP further cited the Mann government’s welfare initiatives in healthcare, education, electricity and social welfare. It specifically highlighted the Mawan Dheeyan Satkar Yojna, which it said provides direct financial assistance to women across Punjab.
The party also claimed that free electricity, expanded healthcare services, strengthened government education and other welfare measures had been undertaken by the state government for ordinary families. It alleged that central agency action was aimed at institutions and resources involved in carrying out these programmes.
On Mohali’s development, AAP said GMADA is involved in major infrastructure and urban projects, including roads, IT City, Aerotropolis and Expo City. The party alleged that creating pressure among GMADA officers could affect the implementation of these projects and slow the city’s development.
AAP challenged the BJP to compete with the Mann government on governance rather than through the use of central agencies.
“If the BJP believes that it can challenge the Mann Government, then it should come before the people and compete on governance,” the party said, questioning why central agencies were allegedly being used against Punjab’s institutions and officials.
The party also compared the situation with what it described as the use of agencies, raids and pressure tactics before the Delhi Assembly elections. AAP alleged that a similar approach was now being attempted in Punjab, while asserting that the state would not be intimidated.
AAP said Punjab Government officials should be allowed to perform their duties without fear and alleged that agency action should not be used to undermine the mandate given to Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.
The party maintained that the state government would continue implementing welfare schemes and development projects across Punjab. It said the Mawan Dheeyan Satkar Yojna would continue to reach women, welfare programmes would remain operational and development work in Mohali would proceed despite the alleged pressure.
