Patna, September 22, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
RJD National Working President and Bihar Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav on Tuesday demanded Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary’s resignation over the alleged molestation of a minor student in Jamui and questioned the state government’s handling of law-and-order issues.
Addressing a press conference at his residence in Patna, Tejashwi said the Jamui incident had brought disrepute to Bihar and alleged that the government had not demonstrated sufficient seriousness in dealing with crimes against women and girls.
He referred to an earlier statement attributed to Choudhary in which the Chief Minister had said he would resign if an incident involving a woman or girl occurred in Bihar. Tejashwi said that if Choudhary stood by that statement, he should step down.
The Jamui incident, involving a Class 10 girl and a male student, came to light after a video of the alleged harassment surfaced on social media. Police have registered an FIR under relevant provisions, including the POCSO Act, and formed a special investigation team. Three accused have been arrested, while efforts are continuing to trace others allegedly involved.
Tejashwi also criticised remarks by ruling alliance leaders describing the episode as an “isolated” or “minor” incident. He demanded that leaders who, according to him, had sought to minimise or divert attention from the case apologise to the people of Bihar.
He said police had identified seven to eight people allegedly involved and demanded action against all those found responsible. He also reiterated his demand for the harshest punishment permissible under law following a speedy trial.
Tejashwi further questioned the government’s response to the incident and criticised Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi over his remarks on the case, alleging that the issue was being used for political purposes.
During the press conference, Tejashwi also raised alleged deaths in police and judicial custody in Bihar and demanded judicial inquiries into such cases.
Referring to the death of Amarjeet Yadav in Sasaram, he said the RJD had met the deceased’s family and provided financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh. He demanded action against officials found responsible and called for the dismissal of the Sasaram Jail Superintendent and registration of an FIR against him.
Tejashwi cited figures he said were acknowledged by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai in Parliament. According to the figures cited by him, based on information received from the National Human Rights Commission, Bihar recorded 19 police-custody death cases between April 2025 and March 15, 2026.
He demanded judicial inquiries into the custodial death cases he referred to and said action should follow wherever investigations establish the responsibility of officials.
Tejashwi also alleged political interference in police postings in Bihar and claimed that a “transfer industry” was operating in the state.
The Jamui case remains under investigation, with police continuing to examine the roles of those allegedly involved.
