Chandigarh, September 22, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Punjab Police on Tuesday denied issuing any advisory directing its personnel to avoid wearing uniforms while commuting between their homes and places of duty, terming messages circulating on social media as fake.

In a post on X, Punjab Police said neither the Police Headquarters nor any other office of the department had issued instructions asking personnel to avoid wearing uniforms while travelling to or returning from duty.

The department specifically rejected claims that police personnel had been directed to wear civilian clothes while commuting. It urged police personnel and members of the public to ignore such messages and rely only on official channels for authentic information.

The clarification came after a notice circulated on social media claiming that, following the killing of Punjab Police ASI Harjit Singh, the Inspector General, Border Range, had advised personnel posted in districts along the Pakistan border to avoid travelling in uniform between their homes and places of duty.

Punjab Police said no such advisory had been issued.

ASI Harjit Singh was killed while performing his duty on September 18. Following the incident, police launched an investigation and intensified efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible.

A high alert was subsequently sounded in Amritsar and adjoining areas, with police increasing checks at toll plazas and other key points as teams searched for the suspects. Police later received information that the suspects were moving in the area and could potentially be looking for another target.

One accused in the ASI’s murder was killed in a police encounter on September 19, while his alleged accomplice escaped under the cover of darkness, according to Punjab Police Commissioner Harmanveer Singh Gill.

Gill said the killing was linked to a conspiracy involving Pakistan-based handlers. He alleged that youths were being lured with promises of money and a share in the illegal drug trade, while the handlers demanded proof of their involvement by targeting police personnel.

Investigators also found that the accused allegedly returned to the crime scene after shooting Harjit Singh and recorded a 30–40-second video to send to their overseas handlers as proof that the task had been completed. The alleged act was captured on CCTV, while forensic examination of mobile phones is underway.

Gill appealed to parents to closely monitor their children’s activities and safeguard them from exploitation through social media, drugs and criminal networks.
