As many as 275 Indian nationals remain missing following the devastating flash floods in Nepal, while an Indian forensic team is working with Nepali experts to identify victims, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Tuesday.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the Indian forensic team is currently working in Kathmandu alongside Nepali experts at several laboratories. The team has examined around 3,000 samples and generated 1,200 DNA profiles so far.
“On the missing Indian nationals, we await to hear from Nepali authorities,” Jaiswal said during the MEA’s weekly media briefing.
He added that, apart from the 275 missing Indian nationals, several people from the Indian diaspora and persons of Indian origin were also reported missing.
India has been providing assistance to Nepal since the disaster, based on requests received from the Nepali government, Jaiswal said. The assistance has included relief supplies as well as rescue and specialist teams.
A 54-member Indian team was sent to Nepal following the floods. It comprised 30 tunnel rescue experts, 19 forensic specialists and a five-member medical team. While some members have returned, others continue to assist authorities on the ground.
Jaiswal said the Government of Nepal is currently assessing the situation and India remains engaged in supporting relief and identification efforts.
An Indian Air Force flight carrying 11 tonnes of relief supplies arrived in Kathmandu on Saturday and handed over the material to the Nepal government.
The latest sortie took the number of special flights dispatched by India to nine since the floods struck on August 26. These flights have transported relief material, equipment and specialist personnel to Nepal.
