A 17-year-old boy was shot dead allegedly by suspected militants in Manipur’s Tamenglong district on Monday, police said.
The victim, identified as N.K. Wiphenbou, was reportedly travelling alone from Upper Takou village towards Tamei town when he was attacked. Police said Naga village volunteers later found his body along a narrow path in the hilly area.
The killing drew condemnation from Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen and Naga People’s Front legislator and senior Naga leader Awangbou Newmai.
The Chief Minister’s Office, in a post on X, said Khemchand Singh condemned the killing of Wiphenbou, son of N.K. Maihinlakbou of Upper Takou village in Tamei subdivision.
The Chief Minister described the killing of an innocent student as unacceptable and conveyed condolences to the bereaved family.
Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh also condemned the killing, asking, “Today, it is 17-year-old NK Wiphenbou. Who will be next?”
Biren Singh said the teenager was travelling to purchase essential commodities when he was killed and expressed concern over the continuing loss of civilian lives in the state.
“Manipur cannot continue to lose innocent lives to this endless cycle of violence,” he said, calling for decisive action, accountability and the early arrest of those responsible.
Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen described the killing as “cowardly” and appealed to all concerned to maintain peace and restraint.
She said the safety of civilians must be protected and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, followed by action in accordance with law.
Awangbou Newmai also condemned the killing, describing such attacks as “heinous acts of terrorism” that target civilians and threaten peace.
According to police officials, more than 40 people have been killed since clashes between Naga and Kuki communities broke out in February this year.
Officials said 12 people, including six women, have been killed in a series of violent incidents reported over the past month in Jiribam, Tamenglong, Kangpokpi and Noney districts.
Kangpokpi, Tamenglong, Noney, Ukhrul and Kamjong have remained among the districts most affected by violence involving the two communities.
