The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has summoned Trinamool Congress legislator Sabina Yasmin for questioning in connection with the attack on judicial officers during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in West Bengal’s Malda district earlier this year.
Yasmin, the Trinamool Congress MLA from the Sujapur Assembly constituency, has been asked to appear before the agency on September 24 in connection with the case.
The incident took place in April at Mothabari under the Kaliachak-II block of Malda district, when judicial officers engaged in the adjudication process related to the SIR exercise were allegedly attacked and detained by a mob.
The judicial officials had been carrying out the adjudication exercise at the office of the local Block Development Officer (BDO) when they were reportedly prevented from leaving the premises for several hours.
Protesters also blocked National Highway-12 and staged demonstrations. During the effort to rescue the judicial officers, their vehicles were allegedly attacked, following which police intervened and took them to safety.
The incident triggered criticism of the then state government and the Trinamool Congress, which was in power in West Bengal. A section within the Trinamool Congress, however, sought to portray the violence as a spontaneous reaction by people whose names had been deleted during the SIR exercise.
The NIA subsequently took over the investigation into the case.
Earlier, the agency had summoned Yasmin’s husband, Mehboob Alam, for questioning in connection with the matter. The latest summons has now been issued to the Sujapur MLA herself.
A total of 12 cases were registered in connection with the Mothabari incident. The NIA has so far filed two chargesheets, running into 54 pages and 11 pages respectively, naming 23 people as accused.
The accused have been booked under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including offences relating to attempt to murder, assault on government servants, harassment, obstructing a government servant from performing official duties, illegal detention and obstruction of government work, among other charges.
