The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday extended its interim stay on the demolition of the office of Trinamool Congress General Secretary and Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee at Amtala in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district till November 30.

Justice Suvra Ghosh, hearing the matter before a single-judge bench, also directed the West Bengal government to submit a detailed report specifying the items seized from the Amtala office.

The court directed that a copy of the report be provided to the petitioner before the next hearing, which has been scheduled for November 26.

During the hearing, counsel representing Abhishek Banerjee submitted that although there were reportedly discrepancies concerning other plot numbers, a portion of the Trinamool Congress office located on plot number 507 had been demolished.

The counsel argued that Banerjee should be compensated for what was described as an error by the district administration.

The matter originated from a complaint filed by Sushant Mondal on May 17, alleging that the Amtala office had been illegally constructed. Acting on the complaint, the state administration initiated action against the property.

A portion of the office was demolished on July 18, while demolition work resumed the following day. The Calcutta High Court subsequently issued an interim stay on the demolition.

The office is registered in the name of Leaps & Bounds Private Limited, a corporate entity linked to the Banerjee family, and the administrative notice concerning the property was also issued in the company’s name.

The Trinamool Congress leadership, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, had alleged that the administration began the demolition without serving prior notice and without providing details of the grounds on which the action was initiated.

The party also alleged that no opportunity had been provided to present its case before the demolition began.

After considering the submissions from both sides, the High Court had ordered an interim halt to the demolition. The stay has now been extended until November 30.
