The High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur has advised Indian nationals not to travel to Malaysia to seek employment using the country’s 30-day visa-free entry facility, warning that doing so could result in overstay, illegal immigration status, exploitation, detention and legal action.
In an advisory issued on Tuesday, the High Commission said there had been “a noticeable increase in Indian nationals arriving in Malaysia using the 30-day visa-free facility, to seek employment.”
The mission clarified that the visa-free facility for Indian passport holders is intended only for tourism and social visits. Indian nationals entering Malaysia as tourists have been urged to strictly follow the conditions of their stay and not take up employment without the required authorisation.
The High Commission also cautioned travellers against unscrupulous agents offering fraudulent job opportunities. It said several Indian nationals had allegedly been misled by false employment promises, resulting in overstays, irregular immigration status, exploitation, detention and legal action.
The mission stressed that seeking employment through the visa-free facility is contrary to Malaysian immigration rules and urged prospective workers to obtain the appropriate work authorisation before travelling.
Indian tourists have also been advised to carry valid and verifiable documents to avoid immigration-related difficulties on arrival. These include a confirmed return ticket, hotel booking and proof of online submission of the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) three days before arrival.
Travellers have further been advised to ensure that their passports have at least six months of validity.
Reiterating its warning, the High Commission said Indian nationals should “not travel to Malaysia for work / employment purpose without work permit or visa with reference (VDR).”
The advisory comes amid concerns over Indian nationals being lured by false job offers and subsequently falling foul of Malaysian immigration regulations.
