Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday described the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort as a “memorable” occasion and called upon citizens to renew their commitment to building a developed India, or Viksit Bharat.
Sharing photographs and glimpses of the celebrations in a post on X, Modi reflected on the significance of Independence Day and paid tribute to those whose courage and sacrifice secured the country’s freedom.
“A memorable Independence Day at the Red Fort! This day reminds us of the courage and sacrifice of those who gave us freedom. At the same time, it is a day to renew our commitment to building a Viksit Bharat,” he said.
The Prime Minister added that the Tricolour should continue to inspire the nation to overcome challenges, strengthen unity and remain dedicated to the country.
Earlier, Modi hoisted the National Flag from the ramparts of the Red Fort and addressed the nation as India marked its 80th Independence Day. The flag unfurling was followed by a 21-gun salute, while a ceremonial showering of flowers from a helicopter was also carried out.
Beginning his address with references to ‘Vande Mataram’ and the Tricolour, Modi remembered freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for India’s independence.
“Today, every heartbeat is echoing with Vande Mataram; today, there is ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’,” he said, paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters.
Modi also highlighted the significance of this year’s celebrations, saying the National Song was echoing from the Red Fort for the first time since Independence as the country marks 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’.
During his address, the Prime Minister introduced the concept of ‘Sapta Dhara’ (Seven Streams), identifying seven areas of strength that he said could provide India with the momentum and capabilities required to accelerate growth and achieve the goal of becoming a developed nation.
Drawing a parallel with ‘Sapta Sindhu’ (Seven Rivers), Modi said India needed a new current of development and national strength to fulfil its aspirations for Viksit Bharat.
He said the next five to seven years would be particularly important for the country and argued that the combined strength of the seven streams could help India accomplish in the coming years what had remained unfinished over several decades.
The Prime Minister also emphasised the need to fully harness the capabilities and potential of India’s youth and integrate their strengths into the nation’s development and nation-building efforts.
