US President Donald Trump has said his administration will begin using the term “Superintelligence” instead of “artificial intelligence”, arguing that the word “artificial” inaccurately suggests the technology is not real.
Trump announced the proposed terminology change during his address to the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, saying the new term would be used in US government documents and expressing hope that other countries would follow suit.
“From this point forward, all of United States documents, and hopefully the world’s, will be changed to use the much more accurate term Super as opposed to Artificial,” Trump said.
“So, it’s Superintelligence. In other words, welcome to the new world of Superintelligence-SI,” he added.
Trump described the technology as real and potentially transformative, while acknowledging that its development would present challenges requiring oversight.
“Every major new technology brings challenges, and Superintelligence is no exception,” he said.
At the same time, Trump rejected efforts to establish an international framework for regulating AI, describing such proposals as an attempt to create what he called a “globalist scheme” to control the technology.
“The United States also totally rejects any attempt to construct a globalist scheme to control for the artificial intelligence being spoken of so much now,” he said.
Trump also dismissed warnings that increasingly advanced AI systems and robots could pose an existential threat to humanity. He compared such concerns with previous predictions about climate change and accused those raising them of repeatedly promoting fear.
The US President said Washington would not restrict the growth of a technology that he believes could become more consequential than the Industrial Revolution or the internet.
“I’m not going to stifle growth of something that will be bigger than the Industrial Revolution,” he said.
Trump nevertheless said the administration would monitor the sector and rely on the Department of Justice and other law enforcement agencies when intervention was considered necessary.
He framed advanced AI development as a strategic competition among countries, arguing that technological leadership would have major implications for global power.
“Whoever wins AI, you have to remember this. And now I say, whoever wins SI, whoever wins Superintelligence wins,” Trump said. “That’s the group that wins.”
Trump claimed that the US was currently well ahead of China and other countries in the technology and said his administration would work to maintain that lead.
“We’re leading now over China by a lot and everyone else and we’re going to keep it that way,” he said.
Trump did not provide details on how the proposed terminology change would be implemented across federal agencies or whether it would require an executive order.
He also did not clarify whether “Superintelligence” would be used for all existing AI systems or only for the most advanced forms of the technology.
