Four youths have been arrested within about six hours after a video purportedly showing the alleged molestation of a minor girl in Bihar’s Samastipur district went viral on social media, police said.
The incident reportedly took place on September 15 on a road near the Jagatsinghpur embankment under Karpurigram police station. Police launched an investigation after their social media monitoring team detected the video and subsequently formed a team to identify those involved.
Samastipur Superintendent of Police Arvind Pratap said at a press conference that all four accused were arrested within approximately six hours of police learning about the incident.
According to the SP, one of the accused had previously been jailed in an alcohol-related case. Police also recovered a copy of the video from a mobile phone belonging to one of the accused.
During interrogation, the accused allegedly told police that he had sent the video to another person, following which it was circulated further and eventually went viral on social media. Police seized the mobile phone and included it in the seizure list as part of the investigation.
Pratap said that, prima facie, the girl seen in the video appears to be a minor. He appealed to media organisations and social media users not to share the video, photographs, posts or other material that could reveal her identity or cause further social or psychological harm.
The video purportedly shows several youths surrounding and harassing the girl on a public road, while she appears to try to leave and asks them to let her go. Another person appears to have recorded the incident.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the incident, including how the video was recorded and how it was subsequently circulated. The police have said strict legal action will be taken against those found responsible.
