Indian boxer Kapil Pokhariya secured India’s sixth boxing medal at the ongoing Asian Games after registering a dominant 5-0 victory over South Korea’s Kim Gichae in the men’s 90kg quarterfinal at Nishio Gymnasium on Monday.
Kapil controlled the bout throughout, earning the verdict of all five judges. Four judges scored the contest 30-27 in his favour, while the fifth awarded him a 30-26 decision, underlining his dominance in the ring.
The Indian pugilist began strongly, taking the opening round 5-0 with a series of accurate and powerful punches. He maintained his momentum in the second round, continuing to land effective blows and forcing a standing count against Kim to secure another 5-0 round verdict.
With a substantial advantage built over the first two rounds, Kapil adopted a measured approach in the third, landing occasional well-timed punches to seal his place in the semifinals.
Kapil will now face 2025 World Championships gold medallist Turabek Khabibullaev in the semifinal.
India enjoyed a productive day in boxing, with all three Indian boxers who entered the ring on Monday winning their respective bouts. Priya Ghanghas and Lovlina Borgohain also secured victories in their quarterfinals to assure themselves of medals.
Priya defeated Tajikistan’s Mijgona Samadova 5-0 in the women’s 60kg quarterfinal, securing her place in the semifinals and confirming a medal for India.
Earlier, Lovlina Borgohain registered a convincing 5-0 victory over South Korea’s Seong Suyeon in the women’s 75kg quarterfinal to book her medal.
India had already secured three boxing medals on Sunday, when Ankush Panghal, Parveen Hooda and Narender won their respective quarterfinal bouts.
Ankush, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, assured India of its first boxing medal at the ongoing Games with a unanimous 5-0 victory over Tajikistan’s Nekruz Salimov in the men’s 80kg quarterfinal.
Parveen Hooda also advanced to the semifinals in the women’s 65kg category after defeating Uzbekistan’s Navbakhor Khamidova 5-0.
Narender completed the trio of medal assurances on Sunday with a quarterfinal victory over Thailand’s Adthapong Saengtep in the men’s +90kg category.
Kapil’s victory added another medal to India’s boxing tally, with the country continuing its campaign across multiple weight categories at the Asian Games.
