Actress Shweta Tiwari has spoken out against the growing abuse faced by women on social media and thanked an MNS member for helping track down a man who allegedly used derogatory language against her online.
Tiwari had recently shared screenshots of abusive comments directed at women and questioned whether such behaviour was acceptable from people claiming to support Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray. Her posts drew attention to the wider issue of online harassment and the normalisation of abusive language against women.
In her latest Instagram post, Tiwari said MNS member Snehal Adarkar contacted her and clarified that the party did not support or appreciate such behaviour. Adarkar also told her that the men involved were not members of the party.
Tiwari said Adarkar and the MNS team subsequently worked to identify the person responsible. Within three days, she received the man’s phone number and a handwritten apology, according to the actress.
“I genuinely want to thank @adv_snehal_adarkar and the MNS team for taking the effort to look into this, find the person responsible and get back to me,” Tiwari wrote.
She said she appreciated the fact that the matter had been taken seriously, but stressed that the issue extended far beyond one individual.
“We may be able to catch one or two people here and there, but what about the thousands, or perhaps millions, of people who hide behind their screens and feel completely invincible?” she asked.
Tiwari said the larger concern was the mentality that allows people to believe they can abuse women online without consequences. She argued that addressing individual incidents alone would not be enough to change such behaviour.
The actress had earlier questioned why people who identify with Marathi culture or claim to support Raj Thackeray would use abusive language against women. She also said that women deserve respect regardless of differences in identity, language or background.
Tiwari is currently seen in the second season of the reality show The Traitors.
