Assam Rifles and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) have seized 5.60 lakh methamphetamine tablets worth approximately Rs 168 crore in Assam’s Cachar district and arrested a suspected drug peddler, officials said on Thursday.
The joint operation by Assam Rifles and DRI, Silchar, was conducted during the night of August 25-26 in the Jujhang Pahar area of Lakhipur in Cachar district. The operation led to the recovery of around 60 kg of Yaba tablets, besides the seizure of a truck allegedly used to transport the contraband.
According to officials, the consignment is suspected to have originated in neighbouring Manipur and was being transported towards Assam through National Highway 37. A preliminary assessment indicated that the inter-state syndicate was using Cachar and Sribhumi districts as transit corridors for transporting narcotics further towards mainland India.
The arrested individual, along with the seized contraband and vehicle, has been handed over to the concerned authorities for further investigation and legal proceedings.
Officials described the recovery as a major setback to the inter-state narcotics network and said the operation demonstrated the effectiveness of coordinated action by Assam Rifles and the DRI in disrupting trafficking routes.
Methamphetamine tablets, commonly known as Yaba, are highly addictive synthetic stimulant drugs. The Northeast has remained a key transit region for narcotics trafficking, with agencies continuing to step up surveillance and interdiction operations along routes linked to the international borders. The DRI has previously reported multiple methamphetamine seizures in Assam, including recoveries from trucks intercepted in Cachar.
