Singer Sonu Nigam has denied commenting on the controversy surrounding actor Kriti Sanon’s Raksha Bandhan advertisement, clarifying that a social media post attributed to him was not written by him.
Nigam shared a screenshot of a media report on his official Instagram account and pointed out that the X account quoted in the report does not belong to him. The singer wrote in his caption, “This is not me and This has never been me.”
The post that was attributed to Nigam had commented on the backlash over Kriti’s advertisement and argued that the controversy was not about a woman’s clothing but about the use of religious traditions in advertising. Nigam has repeatedly maintained that he is not active on X, with fans also pointing out that the account belongs to another person with the same name.
Singer Prajakta Shukre also supported Nigam’s clarification, questioning why an account using his name continued to share opinions that could be mistaken for those of the veteran singer.
Shukre also criticised media outlets for publishing statements without verifying the identity of the account holder, stressing that statements attributed to public figures should be authenticated before publication.
The controversy began after jewellery brand GIVA released a Raksha Bandhan advertisement featuring Kriti Sanon. The campaign drew criticism from a section of social media users over her outfit, which comprised a bralette-style blouse, cape and draped skirt.
Kriti later defended the campaign, arguing that the essence of festivals lies in emotions and traditions rather than clothing. She also questioned the practice of telling women what to wear and said culture and traditions reside in the heart rather than in a woman’s neckline.
The brand subsequently withdrew the advertisement following the backlash, saying it respected Indian culture and traditions and did not intend to hurt anyone’s sentiments.
