Chandigarh, September 25, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

A Chandigarh Police Head Constable was shot dead at his official residence in Sector 22 on Friday morning, with police taking his son into custody for questioning in connection with the incident.

The deceased was identified as Nitin, who was posted in the Accounts Branch of the Chandigarh Police.

Police received information about the shooting and a team from Sector 17 police station reached the residence and launched an investigation. A country-made pistol was recovered from the scene, while forensic experts were called in to examine the house and collect evidence.

Nitin was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His body has been sent for post-mortem examination.

Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police Kanwardeep Kaur said the victim’s wife and son were present in the house when the shooting took place. She said the investigation was at an early stage and that it was too soon to draw conclusions.

According to officials, Nitin’s son, Armaan Singh, initially told investigators that outsiders had entered the premises and killed his father. Police subsequently became suspicious of his account and questioned him further before taking him into custody for detailed interrogation.

SHO Sudesh Kumar also said it was too early to comment on the circumstances or motive behind the killing. Investigators are examining the sequence of events inside the residence and the possible role of those present at the time.

Police are also looking into reports linking Armaan to an earlier case involving an SUV that allegedly hit people. He is currently out on bail. Officials are examining whether that matter has any connection with Friday’s shooting, though no such link has been established.

Senior police officers and forensic personnel inspected the Sector 22 residence as investigators worked to reconstruct the circumstances surrounding the death.

The killing comes a week after Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector Harjit Singh was shot dead while on duty in Amritsar on September 18. Earlier, on September 11, Assistant Sub-Inspector Jaswant Singh, posted in Ajnala, Amritsar, survived an attack by motorcycle-borne assailants after a bullet passed through his turban.
