Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Canada in December, as the two countries work towards concluding a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) by the end of 2026.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Carney said trade negotiations with India were making “good progress” and described the bilateral relationship as “exceptionally important” across several areas.
Carney said Modi would be visiting Canada around the time of the expected progress in the trade negotiations and added that he looked forward to hosting the Indian Prime Minister.
The proposed visit comes amid renewed efforts by both countries to strengthen economic ties. Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said earlier this week that she looked forward to meeting External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during the UN high-level week to discuss the CEPA.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has also held discussions with Canada’s Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu on advancing the trade agreement.
Sidhu said the fourth round of negotiations had recently concluded and stressed the need for continued face-to-face engagement between the two sides. He said Canada and India recorded $30.8 billion in two-way trade in 2024, with Ottawa targeting an increase to $70 billion by 2030.
According to Sidhu, a CEPA could create opportunities for Canadian businesses in sectors including agriculture and agri-food, energy, critical minerals, artificial intelligence and technology, aerospace and defence.
Goyal said both sides had reaffirmed their commitment to expediting the negotiations and concluding the CEPA at the earliest. He expressed confidence that an early agreement would help increase bilateral trade and deepen the economic partnership between India and Canada.
