The Congress on Thursday said it has not taken any decision on joining the Omar Abdullah-led government in Jammu and Kashmir, amid reports that the ruling National Conference (NC) has renewed its offer to induct Congress legislators into the Council of Ministers.
Congress General Secretary in-charge of Jammu and Kashmir, Dr Syed Naseer Hussain, said the party had not decided on the matter.
“No decision has been taken so far on the issue,” Hussain said, responding to reports that the NC had approached the Congress with a fresh offer of ministerial berths.
Reports had earlier suggested that the Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Congress was open to joining the government but was seeking two positions in the Council of Ministers. Sources said the party was willing to negotiate over the second berth and could seek an alternative adjustment for one of its legislators if the NC did not agree to its demand for two cabinet berths.
The Congress’s J&K unit is also seeking a coordination committee comprising alliance partners to ensure its participation in the government’s decision-making process.
According to sources, the Congress high command has discussed its terms for joining the government with the NC and is awaiting a response.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had earlier said a reshuffle of the Council of Ministers would be carried out after August 15 at an “appropriate time”. The proposed exercise is expected to include redistribution of portfolios among existing ministers as well as the induction of new faces from the NC, according to reports.
The 90-member J&K Legislative Assembly has 41 NC MLAs, 29 from the BJP, six from Congress, four from the PDP and one each from CPI(M), Peoples Conference, Awami Ittehad Party and AAP, besides six Independents.
Congress, with six MLAs, CPI(M) with one and two Independents are supporting the NC-led government.
