Actress Nimrat Kaur looked back at her school days on Independence Day, recalling celebrations filled with Tricolour flags, patriotic songs, lessons on India’s freedom struggle — and plenty of samosas, jalebis and laddoos.
In a video shared on Instagram, Nimrat spoke about experiencing Independence Day celebrations at several schools during her childhood, saying each institution had its own way of marking the occasion.
“Every school had its own way of celebrating Independence Day, and I think I got to see six or seven different types of celebrations of Independence Day,” she said.
She recalled that food was a common feature of the celebrations, with students receiving packets containing samosas, jalebis, laddoos and sandwiches, along with Independence Day cake.
While the food was something she eagerly looked forward to as a child, Nimrat said her teachers also helped her understand the significance of Independence Day, including the sacrifices made during the freedom struggle and the lives people led before Independence.
She said the complexities surrounding the period, including Partition, became clearer as she grew older, while childhood memories remained focused on the simpler and happier moments of the celebrations.
Nimrat remembered carrying small Indian flags to school and participating in activities involving the Tricolour. She also recalled making colourful objects during SUPW classes, a school activity that she noted is no longer common.
One of her strongest memories, she said, was gathering with classmates on the assembly ground to sing the National Anthem and watch the National Flag being unfurled as flowers were showered from it.
Describing the memory as “so special and so iconic”, Nimrat said the experience continued to evoke a deep sense of pride and emotional attachment to India.
“I feel so proud as an Indian. I feel so attached to my country, my soil, and there is nothing more dear to me than being an Indian and having the identity of India,” she said.
Nimrat concluded her message with Independence Day greetings and a light-hearted promise to get herself some samosas.
In the accompanying caption, she wrote: “Some things don’t change, they only grow with time – my love for our motherland and this beloved day…Happy Independence Day to my fellow citizens…long live our country, long live our spirit. Jai Hind.”
