The Kerala BJP on Friday demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into alleged financial irregularities surrounding the proposed 2025 visit of football superstar Lionel Messi to the state, which ultimately did not take place.
State BJP General Secretary S. Suresh urged the V.D. Satheesan-led government to hand over the investigation to the CBI, arguing that the controversy had international dimensions involving Argentina and diplomatic missions, besides allegations of financial wrongdoing.
Suresh alleged that the state government’s name had been used in connection with the proposed Messi event and called for a comprehensive examination of the financial transactions associated with it. He also sought a criminal case over alleged GST evasion and said those responsible should face legal action, including arrest wherever warranted.
The BJP leader further alleged that serious allegations had emerged against the previous LDF government and demanded an inquiry into claims that political protection had been provided to those involved.
Suresh also cautioned the Satheesan government against entering into any political understanding with former Chief Minister and CPI(M) leader Pinarayi Vijayan that could suppress or delay the investigation.
He claimed that the alleged intermediary or sponsor linked to the event was facing around 19 cases, including cheating cases, and said Central agencies should examine the financial as well as international aspects of the controversy.
Meanwhile, former Kerala Finance Minister and CPI(M) leader K.N. Balagopal faced questions over alleged GST dues linked to the principal sponsor of the proposed Messi event.
Balagopal, who served as Finance Minister from 2021 to 2026 and now sits in the Opposition front row alongside Vijayan, said he did not have the relevant documents and suggested that officials might have more information.
The proposed visit of Messi to Kerala in 2025 had generated considerable attention but failed to materialise. The latest political exchanges have now brought allegations concerning GST liabilities, financial transactions and the role of various parties into sharper focus.
