A student protest in Ranchi turned chaotic on Friday after a youth allegedly threw black ink at All India Students’ Association (AISA) president Neha Bora during a march demanding reforms in the state’s examination system. The accused was later detained by police.
Thousands of students had gathered near Birsa Chowk carrying national flags and placards to protest alleged irregularities in Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) examinations, including claims of paper leaks.
According to eyewitnesses, a youth from the crowd suddenly threw black ink at Bora while raising “Jai Shri Ram” slogans, leading to a commotion at the protest site. Police personnel present there immediately intervened and took the accused into custody.
During preliminary questioning, the youth allegedly told police that he considered Bora “anti-national” and accused her of supporting 2020 Delhi riots accused Umar Khalid, which he claimed prompted his action.
AISA leaders, however, alleged that people linked to the RSS and BJP were behind the incident.
Meanwhile, some local student aspirants participating in the protest said they did not want any external organisation or political group to take control of the movement, arguing that the focus should remain on examination reforms and student issues.
After the incident, Neha Bora shared pictures of herself covered in ink on social media and said she accepted the act “with pride”. She asserted that such attempts would not weaken her determination or stop the movement for students’ rights.
Bora said she had faced police action earlier and participated in several protests, adding that such incidents would not discourage her.
Following the incident, security was tightened around the Assembly area and nearby routes. Police are questioning the detained youth and have started an investigation into the matter.
The protesters continued to press their demands for action over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations and broader reforms in the education system.
