Former Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) General Secretary Pawan Dewan and former SBS Nagar Planning Board Chairman Satvir Singh Palijikki met Brampton North MP Ruby Sahota, Canada’s Secretary of State for Combatting Crime, to discuss measures to tackle organised crime, extortion, shootings and drug smuggling.
Dewan and Palijikki were accompanied by Liberal Party of Canada National Vice-President Hardam Mangat and Amarpreet Aulakh during the meeting.
The discussions covered a range of issues concerning crime and the measures being adopted by Canadian authorities to deal with criminal networks.
According to Dewan and Palijikki, Sahota spoke about her responsibilities in combating crime, extortion, shootings and drug trafficking in Canada. She explained that Prime Minister Mark Carney had constituted a working committee involving city mayors, provincial ministers, the Public Safety Minister, local MPs, police chiefs, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officials.
The committee, they said, has been backed by substantial financial resources to address these challenges.
Sahota also briefed them about new legislation passed by the Canadian Parliament that gives police greater powers to arrest suspects and search crime scenes. She highlighted measures aimed at strengthening judicial powers to reform offenders and deny bail to criminals.
“With these measures, Canada and the USA have successfully arrested several gangsters and smugglers,” Sahota was quoted as saying, while stressing that the crackdown on extortionists, criminals and traffickers remains ongoing with the objective of putting those involved behind bars.
Dewan and Palijikki described the meeting as fruitful and said the interaction provided them with insights into Canada’s approach to tackling gangsters, extortionists, criminals and smugglers.
During their one-on-one discussion with Sahota, they said they also gained a better understanding of the functioning of crime syndicates and the strategies being adopted to counter them.
