A 16-year-old Class 11 student in Kota allegedly died by suicide after his father took away his mobile phone when he found him playing a game at home, police said.
The teenager, identified as Mayank Nagar, consumed a poisonous substance at his home in the Hanuman Nagar area under Dadabari police station limits on Sunday night. His family rushed him to a private hospital after his condition deteriorated, but he died during treatment on Monday morning.
According to his family, Mayank frequently spent time on his mobile phone. His father, Chauthmal Nagar, said he had asked his son to stop playing the game on Sunday but took away the phone when the teenager did not comply.
A short while later, Mayank consumed the poisonous substance. His uncle, Sant Ram, said the teenager’s condition deteriorated rapidly and he collapsed. When family members asked him what had happened, he reportedly told them that he had consumed poison.
The death of their only son left the family devastated. Chauthmal, who works as a painter and is a heart patient, also experienced a deterioration in his health after learning about his son’s death. Mayank’s mother was reportedly inconsolable.
The family initially declined to allow a post-mortem examination. Police officials subsequently persuaded them to consent to the procedure, which was conducted at the mortuary of New Medical College Hospital on Monday morning. The body was later handed over to the family.
Dadabari SHO Baldev Ram said police had registered a case on the basis of the family’s complaint and launched an investigation.
Chauthmal said he had never imagined that taking away his son’s mobile phone would lead to such a tragic outcome.
The incident has left the family and residents of the area in shock.
