Pakistani authorities have arrested 212 people, including Chinese nationals, during raids on three call centres in Islamabad that were allegedly operating as part of an international online fraud network, according to officials.
The raids were conducted by Pakistan’s National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) at call centres in the E-11 and G-10 sectors of the capital.
According to the agency, the centres were allegedly involved in several types of online scams, including task-based fraud, romance or “love-dating” scams and impersonation of Google representatives.
In task-based fraud, scammers typically approach victims with fake online earning opportunities, initially offering small payments for activities such as liking videos, rating products or promoting content. Victims may subsequently be persuaded to deposit larger sums to undertake higher-value tasks or withdraw purported earnings.
An NCCIA spokesperson said investigators seized 383 computers and CPUs, 306 mobile phones and 299 monitors and laptops during the operations.
The people arrested included Pakistani and Chinese men and women, although authorities did not disclose how many of those detained were Chinese nationals.
The latest arrests come after an earlier NCCIA operation in Faisalabad in July last year, when Pakistani authorities claimed to have arrested 149 people, including 48 Chinese nationals, over alleged involvement in online fraud and other cybercrimes.
According to reports at the time, the suspects were allegedly operating from a factory in Faisalabad and were involved in hacking the internet systems of banks and other cyber-related offences. Authorities had also recovered laptops and other electronic devices from the premises.
The NCCIA is continuing its investigation into the Islamabad operations to determine the extent of the alleged fraud network and the roles of those arrested.
