A viral video showing two young women being stopped, questioned and allegedly pushed by a group of people in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district has prompted a police investigation, with one person arrested in connection with the incident.
The incident took place about a week ago in the Kahalgaon area. After the video surfaced on social media, Bhagalpur police launched an enquiry on the directions of SSP Pramod Kumar Yadav and arrested Rampravesh Yadav, son of Nageshwar Yadav and a resident of Kemachak village under Amdanda police station.
According to the SSP, the police investigation and questioning of local residents indicate that the incident did not involve molestation. Police said elderly people, women and children were also present when the two women were being questioned.
Investigators said two couples from the Shahkund police station area had left their homes without informing their guardians and were planning to solemnise their marriages. The four first travelled to a temple in Sanhaula but moved to a Shiva temple in a rural area under Amdanda after finding a crowd there.
The temple was closed when they arrived, following which some villagers reportedly became suspicious and began questioning them. The two young men allegedly fled, while the women remained at the spot. During the questioning, some people allegedly pushed the women, with the episode captured on video.
Police teams are conducting raids to identify and apprehend others allegedly involved. Investigators are examining the video, eyewitness accounts and other evidence to establish the sequence of events and individual roles.
Separately, police in neighbouring Banka have arrested three men and detained two juveniles in connection with the circulation of an objectionable video linked to Mandar Hill.
Banka SP Amitesh Kumar said Abdullah was arrested from Howrah Railway Station, Anant from his residence and Vibhishan from Patna Railway Station. Police are also examining the role of 41 social media platforms/accounts, including X accounts, in the circulation of the footage.
