Restoring the industrial and commercial glory of Punjab is the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) resolve, and it will be fulfilled at all costs, BJP National President Nitin Nabin said on Monday.
He assured industrialists in Ludhiana that a favourable environment for industrial development and investment will be created in the state, with agriculture running parallel to it.
Nabin said the problems of each sector are different, but government policy, intent and decisive leadership play a crucial role in solving them. He alleged that the Punjab government is not providing proper cooperation to the Centre.
“Punjab’s industrial heritage has been strong, and if it is not the same today, it is a matter of concern. The Central government and the BJP will ensure accountability for this,” he said.
He added that dialogue is essential for progress, but if any government views this with a negative mindset, development is not possible.
Nabin recalled that during the coronavirus pandemic, when he was a minister in Bihar, he witnessed industries migrating from Punjab to Bihar. He said Punjab lacks a supportive environment and system for industries. “Until there is a sound industrial policy in the state, industry cannot progress. Proper law and order and good governance are also essential,” he noted.
Industrialists raised concerns about law and order, organised crime, extortion and deteriorating governance. Mandi Gobindgarh’s industrialists highlighted that bogus Goods and Services Tax (GST) billing in the iron recycling industry causes losses of nearly Rs 2 lakh crore to the exchequer.
Representatives of the bicycle industry pointed out that while China manufactures 30 crore bicycles, India produces only 3 crore, stressing the need for fresh planning. The agro-combine industry raised concerns about reduced time limits for certification. Rice millers flagged rising costs due to the US-Iran war and petrol prices, demanding subsidies for Basmati exports.
The nut-bolt industry termed the high licence fees unfair and demanded reductions. Industrialists emphasised that a “double-engine” government should be formed so Punjab can benefit from central schemes, which they are currently unable to access.(Agency)
