Asian Games: Gulveer Singh Wins 1500m Silver After 10,000m Success, Avinash Sable Finishes Fourth

India’s Gulveer Singh added another silver medal to his tally at the Asian Games 2026, finishing second in the men’s 1500m final on Monday after an earlier runner-up finish in the 10,000m event. Meanwhile, Avinash Sable narrowly missed the podium in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, finishing fourth.

Gulveer clocked a personal best of 3:36.72 seconds in the 1500m final to secure silver, finishing between Japan’s Kazuto Iizawa and Nagiya Mori. Iizawa claimed gold in an Asian Games record time of 3:36.35 seconds, just 0.37 seconds ahead of the Indian, while Mori took bronze in 3:37.92 seconds.

Gulveer’s compatriot Yoonus Shah, who had qualified for the final after finishing third in his heat, finished ninth in the medal race with a time of 3:43.88 seconds. Shah had clocked 3:45.77 seconds in the heats, marginally faster than Gulveer’s 3:45.79 seconds.

In the men’s 3000m steeplechase final, Sable recorded a season-best time of 8:21.67 seconds but finished fourth, missing out on a medal by 4.31 seconds.

Japan’s Ryuji Miura won gold, while compatriot Ryoma Aoki secured silver with a time of 8:17.60 seconds. Qatar’s Zakaria Elahlaami claimed bronze in 8:18.13 seconds.

Gulveer’s 1500m silver was his second medal at the ongoing Games, following his runner-up finish in the men’s 10,000m. His performance in the longer event also marked a milestone in Indian athletics, as he became the first Indian to win two Asian Games medals in the men’s 10,000m.

Gulveer clocked 28:29.38 seconds in the 10,000m final to finish second, adding silver to the bronze he won at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou. Bahrain’s Birhanu Balew claimed gold in 28:27.51 seconds, finishing 1.87 seconds ahead of the Indian, while his compatriot Albert Kiptoo took bronze in 28:34.38 seconds. China’s Wang Wenjie finished fourth in 28:38.14 seconds.

Gulveer’s double silver in Nagoya adds to his growing record at the Asian Games, while Sable’s fourth-place finish came despite his season-best performance in the steeplechase.
