US President Donald Trump has defended hosting Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House, saying the two leaders share good personal ties and that the United States is now making “a lot of money” from China, while claiming Washington is ahead of Beijing in artificial intelligence, which he prefers to call “superintelligence”.
Addressing a midterm election rally in Bullhead City, Arizona, on Wednesday, Trump said Xi’s visit reflected mutual respect and a positive relationship between the two leaders.
“We’re doing great with China. We make a lot of money with China. We used to lose a lot of money with China,” Trump said, adding that China also respected the United States.
Trump cited the length of Xi’s journey as evidence of that respect, saying the Chinese leader would not undertake a 21-hour flight without regard for the US President or the country. He described their meeting as a success but did not disclose details of any agreements or provide figures to support his claim about the financial benefits of US-China relations.
Turning to technology, Trump asserted that the United States was leading China and other countries in artificial intelligence. He argued that the technology should be called “superintelligence” rather than artificial intelligence, saying it was “really super” but warning that its capabilities would need to be monitored.
Trump also recalled hosting leading technology executives at the White House, including at a dinner attended by Xi. He said the Chinese President knew the executives and understood their work but did not identify them.
China featured in other parts of Trump’s remarks as well. Referring to a proposed White House ballroom, he joked that Xi might complain that the structure was “reaching China”.
Trump also promoted a proposed $5,000 payment to Americans if Republicans retain control of Congress in the November 3 elections, insisting the money would have to be spent within the United States. He joked that recipients could not use it to take a trip to China.
