The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) will launch the second phase of its ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ on September 30, covering 84 Assembly constituencies where the party lost in the previous election, KPCC President and MLC B.K. Hariprasad announced on Monday.
Addressing a press conference at Indira Gandhi Bhavan in Bengaluru, Hariprasad said the 84-day padyatra would cover 84 constituencies across the state, with the programme scheduled to begin in Shikaripura taluk of Shivamogga district.
Recalling the first phase of the Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Hariprasad said it began in Kanyakumari on September 7, 2022, and entered Karnataka through Gundlupet on September 30 that year. The march covered around 600 km across 11 districts before concluding its Karnataka leg on October 21.
During the yatra, Rahul Gandhi interacted with people and listened to their grievances.
“After Mahatma Gandhi’s padayatra, Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra was one of the longest padayatras,” Hariprasad said.
He said the second phase would cover the remaining 29 districts of Karnataka, excluding the 11 districts covered during Rahul Gandhi’s march.
Ministers Madhu Bangarappa, Rudrappa Lamani and Zameer Ahmed Khan, along with B.L. Shankar, senior party leaders and district-level Congress representatives, are expected to participate in the padyatra.
Hariprasad said the programme would extend to Assembly constituencies from October 4-5 onwards, with the party planning to conduct the march over 84 days.
Explaining the decision to begin the yatra from Shikaripura, Hariprasad said the Congress wanted to highlight what it described as the shortcomings of the BJP from the constituency of the party’s state president. He also said the march would seek to create public awareness about what he alleged was damage being caused to the Election Commission, a constitutional institution.
“From the BJP state president’s constituency, we will highlight the BJP’s shortcomings and create awareness among people about the damage being caused to the Election Commission, a constitutional institution,” he said.
Hariprasad added that public meetings would be held from 1 p.m. onwards during the yatra.
Former MLC Narayanaswamy and KPCC Media and Communications Department head Ramesh Babu were also present at the press conference.
