Three traffic police personnel were killed and two passers-by injured after unidentified armed assailants attacked a police mobile van in Wazirabad Bazaar in Tank district of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, local media reported on Monday.
District Police Officer Abdul Samad Khan said the three traffic police personnel died at the scene after armed men opened an attack on their mobile van. The assailants took away the police vehicle, which was later recovered, he said, as reported by Pakistani daily Dawn.
Two passers-by were also injured in the attack and taken to a hospital for treatment, Khan said.
Police have sealed roads and other possible escape routes in an effort to prevent the attackers from fleeing the area. Efforts are underway to trace and arrest those responsible for the attack, the police official added.
The incident comes amid an increase in attacks targeting law enforcement personnel in Pakistan, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces.
On September 26, at least 12 people were killed and 35 others injured in a bomb attack on a police checkpost in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The fatalities included nine men, two women and a child, Dawn reported.
According to officials, a trolley laden with explosives was rammed into the Aman Mela police checkpost in Darazinda tehsil of Dera Ismail Khan district. District Police Officer Ziauddin Ahmed said the explosion was a suicide attack.
The blast destroyed a large portion of the checkpost and completely damaged a neighbouring house.
Earlier, on September 10, a police constable was killed and another seriously injured after unidentified assailants attacked a checkpost in the Kank area of Mastung district in Balochistan.
Police said the attackers targeted the checkpost before fleeing following an exchange of fire with personnel stationed there.
