Former Trinamool Congress MLA Ajit Maiti was arrested by West Bengal Police on Friday in connection with an alleged financial fraud case involving accusations that he took money from a party worker after promising to secure a party post for him.
Maiti, who represented the Pingla Assembly constituency, was arrested from his residence in the Madpur area under Kharagpur police station limits in West Midnapore district, police sources said. He was subsequently taken to Debra police station.
According to police sources, the case was registered following a complaint by the party worker, who alleged that Maiti had taken money after promising to help him secure a position within the Trinamool Congress. Local reports have also said the complaint concerns an alleged payment linked to a party post. The police have not publicly detailed the sections invoked in the case.
Maiti is expected to be produced before a district court in Medinipur later on Friday, where prosecutors are likely to seek his custody for questioning.
Speaking after his arrest, Maiti alleged that the action was politically motivated. “I have faith in the judiciary, and I am sure that I will get justice,” he said.
The Trinamool Congress also alleged political vendetta. State secretary Pradyut Ghosh claimed that Maiti was scheduled to visit party leader and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kolkata on Friday and alleged that his arrest just before the proposed meeting was part of a “conspiracy”.
Maiti won the Pingla seat in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. He contested from the constituency again in the 2026 election but lost to BJP candidate Swagata Manna. Election records list Maiti as a candidate of the Trinamool Congress in the 2026 contest.
He has also served as a senior organisational functionary of the Trinamool Congress in the region and is currently associated with the West Midnapore Zilla Parishad.
The arrest comes amid a series of criminal cases involving former TMC leaders following the change of government in West Bengal earlier this year. Several former party legislators and Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillors have faced police action in cases involving allegations ranging from corruption and extortion to other offences.
The allegations against Maiti are yet to be established in court.
