The political dispute over Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar intensified on Friday as Opposition parties backed preparations for a fresh motion in Parliament seeking his removal, while BJP leaders said the proposed move would not succeed.
Congress leader Udit Raj said the issue had moved beyond individual political parties and had become a matter of wider public concern. He argued that constitutional mechanisms should be fully utilised to protect democratic institutions.
“Parliament is a platform, and the constitutional institutions have constitutional authority. That should be fully utilised to protect the Constitution and democracy,” Raj said.
Bihar Minister and BJP leader Ram Kripal Yadav rejected the proposed motion, saying it would be defeated. “The motion will be defeated. It will fall. Impeachment motions have been brought against several people in the past as well. The Opposition will face defeat,” he said.
Jharkhand Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi also criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his remarks concerning the CEC, saying the Congress should reconsider Gandhi’s statements.
The DMK, meanwhile, said it would support the Opposition initiative. Party spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan said the DMK’s leadership had already stated that Kumar should be removed from the post.
“Our leader had issued a statement yesterday that Gyanesh Kumar should be removed from the post… So we will definitely support,” Elangovan said.
Opposition parties are preparing to submit notices in both Houses seeking to initiate proceedings for Kumar’s removal. Congress sources told The Indian Express that the motion was being drafted with legal experts and would be submitted on behalf of the joint Opposition.
The proposed move follows reports of differences within the Election Commission over decisions linked to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The Indian Express reported that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had recorded objections on multiple occasions over poll-panel decisions. The Election Commission has maintained that SIR decisions were taken unanimously.
The Opposition has previously attempted to initiate removal proceedings against Kumar. The Lok Sabha Speaker and Rajya Sabha Chairman rejected motions submitted earlier this year. Under Article 324 of the Constitution, the CEC can be removed only through a process applicable to the removal of a Supreme Court judge.
