Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated India’s mixed 4x400m relay team for its “exceptional performance” after the quartet secured the silver medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya on Thursday.
Machettira Poovamma Raju, Vishal Thennarasu, Vithya Ramraj and Thekkinalil Manu clocked 3:14.46 to finish second in a closely contested final at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium.
The Prime Minister’s Office, in a post on X, praised the athletes for their speed, coordination and determination.
“An exceptional performance by our Mixed 4x400m Relay team! Congratulations to Manu TS, Poovamma MR, Vishal TK and Vithya Ramraj on winning the Silver medal at the Asian Games,” the post said.
Bahrain claimed gold in a Games-record 3:12.87, while Vietnam finished just 0.08 seconds behind India in 3:14.54 to take bronze. Japan was fourth in 3:15.52.
India’s latest medal continues the country’s strong record in the mixed 4x400m relay at the Asian Games. The team won gold at Jakarta 2018 before taking silver at Hangzhou 2023, making the Nagoya silver India’s third consecutive medal in the event.
Vishal was part of India’s gold-winning mixed 4x400m relay team at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea, where he also won silver in the men’s 4x400m relay and finished fourth in the individual 400m.
Vithya has also been an important part of India’s relay programme. She represented the country in the 4x400m relay at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and won silver in the mixed 4x400m relay at the 2022 Asian Games. She also secured bronze in the 400m hurdles at the 2023 Asian Games.
India’s latest silver further underlines its sustained presence on the podium in the mixed 4x400m relay at the continental championships.
