India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana created history on Tuesday by becoming the first woman cricketer to complete 11,000 international runs during the Asian Games gold medal clash against Sri Lanka at Korogi Sports Park.
Mandhana entered the final with 10,987 runs across Tests, ODIs and T20Is, needing 13 runs to reach the landmark. She reached the milestone in quick time after India opted to bat first, hitting two boundaries in the opening over before a six in the third over took her past 11,000 international runs.
The left-hander had 788 Test runs, 5,411 ODI runs and 4,788 T20I runs coming into the summit clash.
Mandhana had recently surpassed former India captain Mithali Raj’s tally of 10,868 runs to become the highest run-scorer across all three formats in women’s international cricket during the Women’s Asia Cup.
She also recently became the highest run-scorer in T20I cricket across both the men’s and women’s games. Mandhana broke former New Zealand batter Suzie Bates’ record during her 37-run innings against Bangladesh in India’s Asian Games semifinal.
India entered the final as defending champions after defeating Japan in the quarterfinals and Bangladesh in the semifinals. Sri Lanka reached the title clash after overcoming Malaysia and Pakistan.
The final was a rematch of the 2023 Asian Games gold medal match and the Women’s Asia Cup clash earlier this month, with India winning both encounters.
Sri Lanka, who have won bronze in 2014 and silver in 2022, were chasing their maiden Asian Games gold. India had won gold in their only previous appearance in the cricket event at the continental Games in 2023.
Both teams retained their playing XIs for the final.
