AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Sunday reiterated his opposition to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), arguing that its implementation would violate several provisions of the Indian Constitution.
Speaking in Lucknow, Owaisi said Articles 25, 26, 29 and 14 could not be set aside in the name of the UCC. He said these constitutional provisions, along with the broader framework of the Constitution, reflected the work of its framers, including Dr B.R. Ambedkar.
Owaisi alleged that the UCC could result in Hindu personal laws being applied to non-Hindu communities. Questioning the possible application of laws governing Hindu marriage, divorce and succession to other communities, he asked how such provisions could be imposed under the UCC.
He also raised the issue of tribal communities, noting that they were being excluded from the UCC on the grounds that their religion, culture and family practices were distinct. Owaisi questioned why Muslims should not similarly be exempted, citing differences in religion, culture and family life.
On law and order in Uttar Pradesh, Owaisi criticised the Yogi Adityanath government over the demolition of mosques and other properties. Referring to the reported demolition of a graveyard in Kanpur, he questioned the legal basis for the action and alleged that due process relating to “waqf by user” had been disregarded.
On unemployment, Owaisi questioned the Uttar Pradesh government’s decision to launch a programme aimed at providing jobs to one lakh young people ahead of the elections. He said the government should first fill the large number of vacancies in the state government and police departments.
Asked about Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s “Chhatron Ki Goonj” programme and BJP allegations that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late mother was insulted during the event, Owaisi declined to comment directly, saying the Congress had capable people who would respond to the issue.
On BSP chief Mayawati’s decision to assign a new responsibility to Ishan Anand, Owaisi described her as a prominent national leader and noted her political record, including forming governments with a full majority without family backing. He said the matter concerned the BSP and would be decided by Mayawati.
Asked whether AIMIM would contest the elections independently or enter into an alliance, Owaisi said it was too early to comment and indicated that the party’s decision would become clear soon.
