The West Bengal Police have arrested two Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders from South 24 Parganas in connection with the December 2020 attack on the convoy of then BJP national president J.P. Nadda, officials said on Monday.
The two accused were arrested from the Magrahat West area under the Diamond Harbour subdivision. Police said firearms were also seized from them.
A police officer described the two men as influential TMC leaders in the area and alleged that they had been involved in various anti-social activities for a prolonged period. Police also alleged that they were associated with a motorcycle gang accused of creating disturbances in the locality.
The officer said the duo’s alleged connection with the attack on Nadda’s convoy was also being investigated. However, police did not provide details of their specific roles in the 2020 incident.
“We are investigating where they got the firearm from. The police are also trying to find out if anyone else was involved in this incident,” the officer said.
On December 10, 2020, Nadda’s convoy came under attack twice in South 24 Parganas while he was travelling to Diamond Harbour for a political meeting. The convoy was targeted at Sirakol in Usti and later at Dostipur in Falta, both within the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency.
Nadda’s vehicle was damaged in the violence, while several people were injured. The Usti police had arrested several people at the time.
Senior BJP leaders Dilip Ghosh and Sukanta Majumdar were also travelling with Nadda during the incident. Ghosh is currently West Bengal’s Panchayat Affairs and Rural Development Minister, while Majumdar is a Union Minister of State for Education.
The attack triggered a major political confrontation between the BJP and TMC, with the BJP alleging that senior TMC leaders, including Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee, had provoked the violence. The TMC rejected the allegations, and both parties traded accusations over the incident and the police response.
The latest arrests have brought the six-year-old case back into focus, with police continuing to investigate the source of the seized firearms and whether other people were involved.
